Coles is attempting to classify its deliver drivers as retail employees rather than transport workers to avoid paying them the correct rate of pay. When a driver works on a Saturday or before 5.30am they are paid $7 less per hour than they should be.
Court proceedings are currently underway to determine whether drivers are transport workers or retail workers. The Union is negotiating with the company and we intend to file wage claims with the Magistrates Court on behalf of members.
The Tulla Sydney Alliance have informed the Union of major road works to occur on this weekend. Part of the Sydney Road bridge will be demolished which will close the M80 Ring Road Altona bound for extended periods.
On Sunday morning the entire Altona bound carriageway between Sydney Road and the Tullamarine Freeway will be closed between 12am and 2am, which involves a long detour.
Separate to these works, there will also be a closure of the entry ramp to M80 Ring Road Greensborough bound from Melrose Drive/Sharps Road on 16 February between 6am and 7pm. We will be monitoring the closure to see if this improves the current congestion at the Tullamarine/M80 interchange.
